  • Christmas at USNA - 2001
photos and story by Barbara Craig
On Monday, December 3, 2001 the Women's Glee Club performed in Memorial Hall to celebrate their 25th year at the Academy. Bancroft Hall was adorned with magnificent bright red poinsettias, illuminated garlands strung from the railings, and a giant Christmas tree in the Rotunda. It was incredibly beautiful. How lucky our children are to live in such a historic and elegant building.

To start the program, both the Men's and Women's Glee Clubs entered Memorial Hall from the rear while the Women sang a moving arrangement of God Bless America. The two groups performed Gaudete and Joy to the World with a brass quintet. After the Men departed, the women sung a combination of traditional and modern holiday numbers, including Carol of the Bells, Magnificat (featuring a plebe with a terrific voice as a soloist), Excerpts from Dancing Day (accompanied by an outstanding harpist), and a new number entitled Set Me as a Seal (another great soloist) which made it's debut performance.

The Sirens did a great arrangement of Silver Bells and the Stowaways of Jingle Bell Christmas. They sang a very clever arrangement of the Twelve Days of Christmas with a decidedly Women's Glee Club slant not unlike the way the Men's Glee Club does There is Nothing Like a Dame, followed by O Holy Night. In addition, there were Christmas Carol Sing-along including one in which the verses were divided up amongst various people in attendance, the last verse ending up as a solo by the lone Flag officer in attendance! Bet he never expected that when he decided to come to the concert! It was an absolutely magical evening of superb singing, talented instrumental accompanists, and of course, the beautiful setting of Bancroft Hall decked out for the holidays.

The director announced that the Glee Clubs will be taping Wednesday for a segment of the Today show to be shown on Christmas morning, and the Christmas in Washington special on TNT to be taped on Sunday, the 9th for airing on the 16th. Just think, in one week, these mids are taping 2 TV shows and performing twice in front of the President, that's quite impressive for a bunch of kids just out of high school. If you are planning on going to the Army-Navy game next year, think about taking a side trip to the Yard early for the Pep Rally and stay for the musical activities the following week, it has been an amazing few days.

On December 8 and 9, 2001 the USNA combined Glee Clubs and the Choir from Hood College, accompanied by professional guest soloists and the Annapolis symphony orchestra performed the Messiah to a capacity crowd in the USNA Chapel. The Chapel was festively decked out with wreaths, garlands, and poinsettias. It was an evening those in attendance will never forget, between the incredible talent of the musicians and the magnificent setting and acoustics. This is an event that should be on everyone's must see list, but get tickets early as they are always sold it on the day tickets go on sale in early November.
