Some
parents were able to arrive early for morning PEP in Farragut Field.
The sun was just coming up and the Plebes were out running. Groups
of Plebes ran by to the sound of parents cheering from the sidelines.
The odor as they ran by was remarkable! Their "blue rims"
(white t-shirts with blue at collar and sleeve) showed evidence
of hard work and heavy stains. On their third pass, the Plebes entered
the PEP field and took their positions. For the following 45 minutes,
they did pushups, situps, ran in circles and went through their
morning routine. Many "broken" Plebes stood at the sidelines
on crutches obviously showing their preference to be on the field
with their classmates. Parents took photos and strained to pick
out their own. At the end of PEP, the students raced out of the
stadium to the cheers of their families.
The day grew HOT and HUMID and we didn't care!
We were going to see our kids for the first time since dropping
them off at I-day. Parents arrived and waited. In the time before
formation and liberty, parents flooded the Mid Store and bought
a wide variety of Navy gear. Lines were long and gave parents
the opportunity to do a little networking among the crowd of '05
parents.
As
the time for formation in T-court drew near, the stands filled
and overflowed with families. Parents stood behind walls and strained
to pick out their own among the uniformed Mids who marched out
in endless streams of summer whites. Many pictures were taken
- sometimes of the wrong Mid who looked just like their own. And
as the ceremony concluded, families scurried to their designated
letter marker on Stribling Walk to meet up with their student.
A heartwarming meeting followed. Mids and families swarmed the
yard with grins a mile wide. There are PDA regulations about what
kind of displays of affection are permissable for Mids. Clearly
these rules do not apply to Moms! And then we wisked them away.
